House Savonnières - 10 bedrooms
37510 - Savonnières
DESCRIPTION
Built in the 17th century, remodelled in the 19th and extended in the 20th, this extraordinary horseshoe-shaped building, encircled by a glass marquee and a remarkable bell tower, spans more than 1,200 m2 over 2 hectares in the heart of parkland planted with trees over a hundred years old.
Closely linked to the history of the Mame family, which was influential in Tours for almost two centuries, the building was the brainchild of Alfred Mame, grandson of the founder of the eponymous printing works, who ran the business from 1845.
His modern management style and passion for botany led him to acquire an estate in 1841, which he expanded in 1857.
He entrusted Eugène Bühler, a renowned landscape gardener, with the transformation of the park, including the construction of greenhouses, caretaker's houses and the famous stables, which were completed in 1869.
Formerly the estate's stables, the building faces due west, is accessible via two entrances, and is marked by its horseshoe-shaped architecture, with brick and tufa facades, remarkable for the region.
The central pavilion opens onto a porch topped by an arch adorned with a sculpted horse's head, a recently restored wooden balcony, a complex roof with a campanile-style wooden bell tower, and curved wings with large arched windows.
The building's ground floor comprises a number of rooms, both through and through-going, including a vestibule, a large reception room, a professional kitchen, an auditorium and its projection room, as well as a number of converted areas, including a former tack room, a lounge, an office and a meeting room.
The first floor comprises a number of flats, some of which already offer recognised tourist accommodation.
The spaces are bright and adorned with details such as floorboards, wood panelling and dormer windows.
A remarkable group of rooms and an attic remain to be renovated according to the project.
The outbuildings include a brick and timber-framed building, a workshop illuminated by a glass roof, and parking spaces.
The parklands, spanning almost 2 hectares, are criss-crossed by wide driveways and adorned with tall trees, including a majestic cedar.
A rare property in the region, with a unique and resplendent architecture, where history and heritage are one and the same, to perpetuate an event activity or develop new projects.
